Start a Group

JPO's are:

Intimate communities of spiritual formation

Welcoming gatherings of those who desire to live under Jesus' rule

Community organization that works to prevent and relieve suffering

they are based on the teachings of jesus, including:

The proclamation of the good news that Jesus is the savior of the world

An invitation to participate in Jesus' way through spiritual transformation and discipline

A warning for those who exploit, oppress, and otherwise bring suffering to others

  1. Talk to your pastor about starting a group.

  2. Set a weekly/bi-weekly time and place for your gatherings with your pastor.

  3. Each member considers making the Participation Pledge.

  4. Identify the assets of the group, including those spiritually gifted to fill the necessary roles to include, at a minimum, hospitality (organizing the meal and other activities), pastoral facilitation (overseeing the videos and discussion), member care (helping other members in prayer and accountability), and service (organizing for good in the community). Organize according to those roles and be sure that every person has a role but that no one dominates or is given too much responsibility.

  5. The facilitator reads through the Community resources.

  6. Start with the Foundational videos, and then choose from Hot Topic or Weekly videos.

  7. Begin a community service project by consulting the Organize for Good resources.

  8. Continue meeting together toward a performative faith, whereby through spiritual disciplines and experiences, individual members begin to be transformed or born again. The group will become increasingly intimate as evidenced by spiritual, emotional, and financial support. The goal is to become a model sub-society that is committed to Jesus' rule of radical love and demonstration of the kingdom of God.

  9. Become a welcoming and mentoring community that consciously seeks out those who are physically, spiritually, and psychologically in need and who are willing to make a commitment to be Jesus' people. Include everybody by teaching the gospel message of good news, invitation and warning toward becoming an intentionally heterogeneous community.

  10. Continually evaluate and adjust roles and responsibilities to allow for participation of all and for some to change roles.

  1. Reach out to friends, family, and neighbors using tools from this website to share God's agenda gospel values. Find people who are motivated by the JPO vision and are willing to commit significant time and resources.

  2. Together, determine your group and individual discipline rhythms to include sufficient group meeting time. This time should be dedicated to (1) welcoming and spiritual formation, (2) planning and organization, (3) community service, and (4) outreach and mentoring.
